Taxes, threat of terror attacks, illness and aging, finances, political conflicts, family relationships, church struggles, fears, insurance issues, air travel impositions, job loss, gasoline prices, war, injustice, death – these are just a few of the enemies most of us face daily. Yet, let me also tell you what the Lord has spoken to my soul:

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

The Lord doesn’t want us to simply possess a generalized peace, based on having no particular problems; nor does He plan to give us a slightly spiritual, yet human-sized kind of peace. If we follow the sequence of obedience He presents, His intention is to shelter us in His very own peace: the imperturbable peace of God.

The peace of God is the deep calm that envelops the thought processes of the Almighty. He is never anxious, always in command, never without a remedy. He sees the end from the beginning and views the needs of man from the position of unlimited resources and capabilities. He perceives the needs of His children with both compassion and confidence, for all things are possible for Him.

The peace He gives is not only from Him, it is an extension of Him – it is the very substance of His peace. It is God-sized peace. It is this divine fabric that He says will “guard [our] hearts and . . . minds in Christ Jesus.”
Amazing!

Many Verses Same Promise: Some may challenge my interpretation, but remember the Savior’s promise:

“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful” (John 14:27).

Again, Paul says: “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful” (Colossians 3:15).

These Scriptures and others reveal that there exists a place of refuge for us, a dimension guarded by God’s very peace, where we can abide. As we enter this realm of trust, the God of peace promises to actually crush Satan beneath our feet (Romans 16:20).

Give Peace A Chance

Of course, we must decide what realm shall preside over us. Thus, the Scripture says, “Let the peace of Christ rule,” and “Do not let your heart be troubled,” and “let your requests be known to God.” The word let speaks of choices we can make with realities that are at hand. Remember, even as circumstances begin to trouble your heart, you can retreat from fear. For the peace of God is also accessible. Take authority over your fretting, worrying attitude, for “it leads only to evildoing” (Psalm 37:8). Stand, instead, in faith upon the promises of God.

Peace is our shield and the Word of God our weapon. Therefore, capture negative, unbelieving thoughts that would magnify problems rather than magnify the Lord. Our Father knows what we have need of before we ask Him (Matthew 6:8).

Cease striving and know that He is God! If you are weary, come to Him and take His yoke upon you. You will find rest for your soul. Finally, recall Paul’s words to make our requests “with thanksgiving.” Many have been thinking too much and thanking too little. Therefore, let us cast our burdens upon the Lord, for He indeed cares for us. He will make a way.

God offers you and me the possibility of a worry-free life. Jesus said,

“Can all your worries add a single moment to your life! Of course not” (Matthew 6:27).

Worry is irrelevant. You don’t add one day to your life or one bit of life to your day by worrying.

Worry is also irreverent; it’s distrusting God…an “unconscious blasphemy.” The Apostle Paul urges us to “be anxious for nothing.” How? Our part includes prayer and gratitude. Instead of looking forward in fear, look upward in faith and backward in appreciation of past victories. God’s part is peace and protection. God enjoys perfect peace because he enjoys perfect power. And he offers his peace to you to guard your heart. Do your part and God will do his.

The sky is falling, and it’s falling disproportionately on you. Anxiety ain’t fun! One would think Christians would be exempt from worry but we are not. It’s enough to make us wonder if the apostle Paul was out of touch with reality when he wrote in Philippians 4:6,

“Be anxious for nothing.”

Is that what he meant? Not exactly. He wrote the phrase in the present active tense—implying an ongoing state.

“Don’t let anything in life leave you perpetually breathless and in angst.”

The presence of anxiety is unavoidable, but the prison of anxiety is optional. Could you use some calm? Of course you could. We all could! We all could use a word of comfort and God is ready to give it.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;” Philippians 4:6

Not only is anxiety uncomfortable; it also leads to negative consequences. For example, reasoning becomes cloudy when permeated with worry. So an anxious person will have trouble making wise decisions. Fear of failure may also lead to procrastination or lack of productivity.

Apprehension can devastate personal and spiritual growth, relationships, and work. So conquering fear is important.

These four steps can help:

1. Identify The Fear. Ask yourself; What are the circumstances surrounding my feelings? What triggered them? What message am I telling myself?

2. Turn To The Lord. Remember that God loves you and desires a close relationship with you. He is in sovereign control of your situation, so bring your apprehension to Him.

3. Rebuke The Fear: You have authority and power in Jesus’ name to reject what isn’t from Him. Meditate on Scripture passages such as Matthew 10:31 and Proverbs 1:33. Let God’s truth replace and wrong thinking.

4. Cling To Your Heavenly Father. Take your focus off your circumstances, and look to the One who promises His help. The Bible gives this assurance: “Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

Circumstances are external and often beyond your control. But your response originates within. It’s amazing how fears diminish in the Father’s presence.

It’s two-thirty in the morning. Everyone is asleep. Everyone, that is, except you! Thoughts rage through your mind. The green numbers on the clock are the only lights in your room, indeed the only lights in your life. Another hour passes. What a mess!

What does all this anxiety, all this restlessness mean? Simply this– you are a human. It doesn’t mean you’re a failure. It doesn’t mean your parents failed you or vice versa. And, this is important, it doesn’t mean you are not a Christian. Jesus battled anxiety, for heaven’s sake! In the Garden of Gethsemane he prayed three times that he wouldn’t have to drink of the cup (Matthew 26:36-44). He was anxious, but he didn’t stay anxious. He entrusted his fears to his heavenly Father and completed his earthly mission with faith. And he will help us to do likewise!

“Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” Matthew 6:26

It was with a heavy heart that I sat down for my daily hour of meditation and prayer. “Lord, I need added faith this morning” I prayed. Many anxieties weighed upon me – chief among them being that my son would have to physically attend his main Cambridge exam in the midst of a lock down, with Covid infections rising.

A few minutes later, I felt an urge to open our balcony door; something I normally don’t do till I finish praying. Little did I realize that such a simple decision, ordained I believe by God, would provide me with a powerful lesson.

Illustration on Anxiety:

Over the next 45 minutes, I saw birds of all sizes, features, and colors, perched on the tree in front of our balcony. They would dart across the branches playfully, chirp out beautiful songs, and enjoy the wonder of just being alive! First there were some parrots, then sparrows, a red-vented bulbul, and I even saw the picturesque blue of a kingfisher. They seemed so happy and free, unlike me – weighed down with anxiety. “I sing because I’m free,” – I remembered the lyrics of the beautiful hymn, “His Eye is on the Sparrow”.

Watching the playful antics of the birds, my thoughts drifted to the words of Jesus. “Surely, if my heavenly Father could look after these birds,” I thought, “how much more would he take care of us, his children”. The peace of God flooded through me as all the anxiety suddenly seemed to evaporate. I knew all of us, including my son, were in safe hands!

Prayer for Anxiety:

Lord, in the midst of my anxiety, may I trust the many promises you have given and be strengthened.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6

Thought

Anxiety is worry over things which we cannot control and which we do not remove from our thoughts. Anxiety dominates and controls a passive mind and a troubled heart, filling both with doubt, fear, and dread. But, anxiety cannot be removed; it must be replaced. We remove our anxiety by giving our concerns and worries to the Lord, trusting him to care for us. Then, as we give him thanks for what he has done and what he is doing in our lives, we replace those concerns and worries with a genuine sense of his presence. As a result, our confidence in his future for us can return.

Prayer

Father, I know you love me. You have done so much to bless and save me. I deliberately place the worries and concerns of my heart in your hands… (specifically mention the things that burden your heart today). Father, I also want to thank you for the many ways you have blessed me over my life… (specifically mention blessings you have received from God). Now, dear Father, please fill my heart with your Spirit and my mind with the sense of your presence and peace. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?” Matthew 6:25

As we live through one of the worst times in recent memory, we may fall into the trap of presentism, otherwise known as “Yeah, but…” It sounds something like this. “Yeah, I know there was the Spanish flu in 1918 and the Great Depression of the 1930s, but COVID-19 is way worse.”

The problem with present-ism is that it minimizes events from the past as being less significant than what is happening today. What this form of arrogance leads to, in many cases, is a magnification of modern problems and an inability to accept tried and true solutions.

What that looks like in the life of a Christian is doubt in God’s Word. When Jesus spoke the words of comfort recorded in Matthew 6, he addressed a generation of Jews and others who were living through tremendous oppression under Roman occupation. We may be tempted to say that our lives today are much worse but, the reality is, it’s impossible to compare.

Our duty today is to take Jesus at his word. When he says that we are not to worry, he means it. Who are we to question God’s provision and care for us during times of tremendous hardship? Ultimately, if God cared for us so much that he provided an eternal way of salvation, how can we question his love for us on a daily basis?

Will you trust in the words of hope and comfort in the Bible today? They were not meant only to bring relief to people long ago but to be a source of inspiration even today.

Jesus, thank you so much for your care for me. Let me not worry, but rely on you to provide what I need to make it through today. Amen.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

Alfred E. Neuman is the fictitious mascot and cover boy of Mad, an American humor magazine. He often appeared in various caricatures underscored with the words,
“Me Worry.”

The Bible could also have a cover that says the same thing, because the Word is replete with admonitions to not worry, be troubled or have anxiety for or about anything. God’s peace surpasses all human understanding. God encourages his followers to “fear not” 365 times in the Bible, one for each day of the year, Jesus didn’t intend for Christians to spend their days preoccupied with anxiety and worry.

As Christians, Jesus is all around us, like a cocoon of light. His presence is a promise, independent of our awareness of Him. Many things can block this awareness, but the major culprit is worry. Many accept it as a fact of life, but worry is a form of unbelief.

Who is in charge of your life? If it is you, then you have good reason to worry. But with Jesus in charge of our life, worry is both unnecessary and counterproductive.

When we start to feel anxious about anything, we should relinquish the situation to Jesus, by backing off a bit and redirecting our focus to Him. He will either take care of the problem or show us how to handle it. In this world we will still have problems, but we need not lose sight on Him.

Jesus told His disciples to not worry about life, what to eat or what to wear, because life is more than food and the body more than clothes. He reminds us that by worrying, we cannot add even an hour to our lives, but seek the Kingdom of God and these things will be given to us as well. Don’t worry about the world and focus on the thing of God.

“Patience produces character, and character produces hope. And this hope will never disappoint us.” Romans 5:4-5 (NCV)

God is often more patient with us than we are with ourselves. We assume that if we fall, we aren’t born again. If we stumble, then we aren’t truly converted. If we have the old desires, then we must not be a new creation.

If you are anxious about this, please remember, “God began doing a good work in you, and I am sure he will continue it until it is finished when Jesus Christ comes again” (Philippians 1:6).
