“Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6:35

Thoughts on today’s verse

We crave food at regular intervals during the day. During this holiday season food occupies our thoughts and fills up our activities. But deep in our soul is a hunger, a soul hunger. It cannot be filled by food, drink, or chemicals. This hunger was the desire built into us by our Creator, placed there when he knit us together in our mother’s womb. This hunger can only be satiated by Jesus.

Prayer:

Please fill me, my Father, with Jesus. Give me today, my Daily Bread, that I may find life in all its fullness. Precious Lord, Jesus my brother and Savior, fill me and touch me with your presence so that I can serve you by blessing those around me with your grace. Amen.

‘Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6:35

Every culture has its own form of bread. Wars have started over the land on which grains grow that are used to make the breads of a region. In the American South, corn bread and biscuits are staples. Focaccia is the Mediterranean’s delicious offering. Our Native Americans make fry bread. In India, it’s naan. In Palestine, it’s pita. Because bread is such a basic dietary item, the word becomes synonymous for food in general.

When Jesus said, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst,” He made a phenomenal statement. By equating Himself with bread, Jesus is saying He is essential for life.

What is your reaction if bread is baking in the oven with the aroma gently filling the air? Can you almost imagine that first taste of the warm loaf? Even though you ate just an hour or so ago, does your stomach rumble with hunger?

Do you, in similar way, hunger after Jesus as bread of life? I often think that such hunger is activated only when we stay close enough to him to sense his aroma. In a spiritual sense, hunger can be described as a longing in the soul. What is it that you long for in your relationship with God? There’s no doubt that Jesus is the bread of life, but too often we have placed something between us and that available bread. Take time today to check your hunger quotient: are you hungry? How hungry are you? Go to Jesus and be richly fed.

What is most satisfying to you about freshly baked bread? What is it about Jesus that draws you to Him and satisfies your spiritual hunger?
