Whenever I get to a place where life seems more than I can handle, there’s that still, small voice that nudges me: “Remember, Idelette, be still and know that I am God.” Often it’s easier to run and accomplish tasks rather than putting on the brakes and quiet my heart. On those days, it is what I need most. My Creator reminds me of that often.

Where do I need God to be God? What are the questions in my heart? Where is it that I need to be still today and invite God in?

What will this day bring, Lord?
Be still and know that I am God.

Is there a relationship that needs healing?
Be still and know that I am God.

Am I anxious about finances?
Be still and know that I am God.

Someone I love is sick, Lord.
Be still and know that I am God.

Am I concerned about my work, my future, my purpose?
Be still and know that I am God.

Prayer:
Thank you, God, that You have already saved the world. I don’t need to. I only need to do what You require of me. Help me return to that place of stillness where I find perspective and strength.

Sleep had been fitful and finally non-existent so at 4:30 a.m., I got out of bed, showered and put on the coffee. Caffeine finally energized me enough to begin the day’s activities but there was still a weight in the pit of my stomach. Late the previous evening we received word of a huge financial loss and our future was murky to say the least. This wasn’t just a matter of belt-tightening but a much more dire situation.

I made my way to the corner where God and I meet each morning and turned to see which psalm was indicated in my well-worn weekly devotional guide. I read the familiar opening verse of Psalm 46: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” I smiled as I thought of God’s perfect timing. He knew what words I would need and when I would need them.

But words farther down struck with even greater force: “Be still and know that I am God.” (The Hebrew language has the meaning of)“relax”. The writer goes on to give the reason why I can choose to be still in the midst of turmoil: Be still! The Lord Almighty is with us.

The situation hasn’t changed but as I consistently refuse to worry and thank God for the One who is my refuge and strength, I am acknowledging that the Lord Almighty knows, understands and stands ready to help.

In the middle of turmoil, Lord, it’s so easy to forget that you not only love me but stand ready to prop up my faltering faith. Help me believe even when I cannot see.

“Be still, and know that I am God!” Psalm 46:10a (NLT)

Be still; these two words are not always comforting to a rescuer like me. It is hard sitting back and watching the ones you love suffer. Feelings of helplessness begin to take a hold of me as I sit back wanting to reach out and pull them from the hardships and the emotional pain they encounter. If I move out on what I want to do, it can hinder their growth. It can move them away from the purpose and the plan of God. The Lord has dealt with my heart on several occasions about this. I realize now that I jump to help out of fear of what may happen. Moving in fear reveals a greater problem; I don’t always trust the Lord with everything that concerns me or those I love. He has allowed me to see that my place, at times is just to pray. Oh this is not an easy task!! I want to act. I want to move, but I hear the Lord whispering steadily, BE STILL.

I have learned through various situations that we have to allow the Lord to complete the work that He began. He knows what is best for each of us and He will indeed perfect all that concerns us. If you too, struggle with running to your loved ones’ aid and playing Holy Ghost Jr, remember, you are only prolonging their process. Be still and know that He is God and He will bring them to their expected end.

Father, teach us how to trust you totally with our lives and those we love; comfort our hearts and grant us assurance as we watch you work in their lives. Help us to know that You are a faithful and a loving God and assure us that we can trust you at all times. Amen.

Take a moment and write down the situations in your life you need to trust God in. Find a scripture on trust that will help you to remember to leave it in God’s hands.
