During my Bible reading, I reflected on how little any one person knows and how limited one person’s wisdom is.

Each of us has insights, knowledge, and wisdom, but the scope is usually fairly narrow and limited to our sphere of influence and knowledge—our world. We are good at what we do and have gained wisdom and knowledge regarding our special interests and experience. But if we were suddenly placed in a new, unfamiliar position or found ourselves in a foreign city unable to speak the language, not knowing how to find a bathroom, we quickly become aware of limitations. Our knowledge and experience will not help us. We need someone to help us.

When we consider the eight billion people in the world – each having wisdom and knowledge about life in their world – we realize how little wisdom each of us as individuals possesses. Compared to God–next to zero!

Now then, think about the wisdom of God. He knows everything and is all-wise. Even if we compiled all the wisdom and knowledge of everyone in the world and measured it against God’s wisdom, it would still be almost nothing.

Also, when we realize that everything we know and everything we have comes from God, we cannot think ourselves wise, but only be humbled before Him.

Remember the “wise advice” Job’s friends gave him when he had lost everything? They thought they were very wise. Job himself questioned God about why this disaster happened to him. God was not impressed by any of them. (Read Job 38 to 41)

What is wisdom? The Bible tells us,

“The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 1:7).

What is knowledge? Some translations of the Bible say,

“The fear the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” (Proverbs 1:7)

When we begin to recognize that our life is about God, not about us – that is the beginning of wisdom.

How do we get more wisdom?

One way is to read God’s Word and to learn from Him.

“Nothing is perfect except your words. Oh, I how I think about them all day long. They make me wiser than my enemies, because they are my constant guide. They make me even wiser than the aged” (Psalms 119:96-100).

Fear God. Know God by reading His word and obey the insights and directions He gives you.

Have you come to the place in your spiritual journey where you recognize that you want the God of all wisdom to be your guide from now on?

If you have, here is a suggested prayer of invitation..

Jesus I know I have been living life independent of you. I invite you into my life to forgive my sins, be with me each day and to guide me. Thank you for your love, forgiveness and eternal life. Amen.

All the attributes of Christ, as God and man, are at our disposal. All the fullness of the Godhead, whatever that marvelous term may comprehend, is ours to make us complete. He cannot endow us with the attributes of Deity; but He has done all that can be done, for He has made even His divine power and Godhead subservient to our salvation. His omnipotence, omniscience, omnipresence, immutability and infallibility, are all combined for our defense.

Arise, believer, and behold the Lord Jesus yoking the whole of His divine Godhead to the chariot of salvation! How vast His grace, how firm His faithfulness, how unswerving His immutability, how infinite His power, how limitless His knowledge! All these are by the Lord Jesus made the pillars of the temple of salvation; and all, without diminution of their infinity, are covenanted to us as our perpetual inheritance. The fathomless love of the Savior’s heart is every drop of it ours; every sinew in the arm of might, every jewel in the crown of majesty, the immensity of divine knowledge, and the sternness of divine justice, all are ours, and shall be employed for us. The whole of Christ, in His adorable character as the Son of God, is by Himself made over to us most richly to enjoy.

His wisdom is our direction, His knowledge our instruction, His power our protection, His justice our surety, His love our comfort, His mercy our solace, and His immutability our trust. He makes no reserve, but opens the recesses of the Mount of God and bids us dig in its mines for the hidden treasures. “All, all, all are yours,” saith He, “be ye satisfied with favor and full of the goodness of the Lord.” Oh! how sweet thus to behold Jesus, and to call upon Him with the certain confidence that in seeking the interposition of His love or power, we are but asking for that which He has already faithfully promised.

Question: Which of God’s glorious attributes will you hold fast to today?

It is often said that knowledge is the accumulation of information. Wisdom is the proper application of that information.

The Bible tells us:

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise. Psalm 111:10

For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:6

The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom, and their tongues speak what is just. Psalm 37:30

It follows then that knowledge is to know the Lord and wisdom is to speak of the Lord, sowing the Gospel of Jesus and His love.

My prayer for us this week

“Heavenly Father we are so grateful that the wisdom you give us is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.

Wisdom and knowledge are related, but not synonymous.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” James 1:5

Wisdom and knowledge are related, but not synonymous. Wisdom is the ability to discern or judge what is true, right, or lasting. Knowledge is information gained through experience, reasoning, or study.

Knowledge involves the accumulation of facts and data, where wisdom focuses on how to use it wisely.

God wants us to have knowledge of Him. But knowing about God is not all there is. God blesses us with wisdom in order for us to glorify Him and use the knowledge we have of Him.

The great missionary, E. Stanley Jones said, “There are those in our churches who know about God, but don’t know Him. They are informed about Jesus, but not transformed by Him”

Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens. If knowledge is information, wisdom is the understanding and application of that knowledge. Knowledge is measuring a desert path. Wisdom is packing enough water for the hike.

Sadly, we can gain a lifetime of knowledge; yet never see the wisdom in it. We live in a world that worships knowledge, but lacks wisdom.

I am convinced that there are many great and educated theologians who will never see the gates of heaven. Their minds are packed with knowledge about God, but their hearts have not been transformed by His grace.

God sent His only Son that we might have the wisdom to accept His forgiveness and have life everlasting with Him, regardless of how much knowledge we may or may not have.

Focus on God and His Word, but drill down deeper from knowledge to spiritual transformation and the acceptance of His grace for life eternal through acceptance of His Son Jesus.
