“Come, everyone who is thirsty— here is water! Come, you that have no money— buy grain and eat! Come! Buy wine and milk— it will cost you nothing! Why spend money on what does not satisfy? Why spend your wages and still be hungry? Listen to me and do what I say, and you will enjoy the best food of all.” Isaiah 55:1-2

A couple of blocks from the state capitol is a popular restaurant. The food is good, but what makes it unique are the names of the menu selections. All are catchy names that include the names of top leaders in state government. Recently, the menu changed. Oh, the food is still the same, but the names changed because the faces of government changed. Some of the “dishes” were defeated for re-election or for election to another office and some just concluded their public career and poof, their names disappeared from the menu.

Life is like that. Whether it is sports, politics, business or some other kind of notoriety, which the world calls success, it can all be over in a fleeting moment and the menu changes. The “out’s” are replaced by the “in’s” and life goes on. There was a time when I had and pass to come and go from the capitol anytime night or day. Now, I wait in the security line with everyone else.

The world sees certain people as winners and others as losers, but God sees differently. Those who are winners in the world’s eyes, are the ultimate losers unless they repent and follow Christ. At the same time, those who the world sees as losers, but who choose to follow Christ will in reality become the real winners.

It is truly amazing the things and positions that people will sacrifice everything for in this life that lose their luster so fast. Ask an athlete how quickly the “high” wears off after winning a Super Bowl. Ask the same to a politician after winning an election or a businessman after a deal that brings him great wealth.

Paul wrote to the Corinthians about their running for a perishable prize when Christ offers the imperishable. Isaiah asked the question: “Why spend money on what does not satisfy?”

Remember that life is about more than getting your name on a menu or receiving a trophy. True satisfaction comes from following Christ, both in this life and in the one to come.
