“He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!” John 9:25

While waiting for a laser procedure on my eyes, my doctor friend spotted me in pre op and asked me to come with him, “to see why we love what we do.” I followed him into the post op area where patients were recovering. As we went from patient to patient, his question was always the same. “Can you see better?”

Each patient said yes and described what was better about their sight. Some saw more vivid colors. Others saw more clearly. And, still others could see without having to wear glasses. One lady said she couldn’t remember having that good of eyesight since she was a little girl. None understood what had happened to them except that they had undergone eye surgery. But one thing they all said was that they could see better.

I thought of the man, a beggar, mentioned in the Gospel of John. He was a man blind from birth. Jesus mixed some mud with His own saliva, placed it on the man’s eyes and told him to go wash in the pool of Siloam. He did as he was told and for the first time in his life he had sight.

He didn’t understand who Jesus was or what had happened to him, but one this he knew with a shadow of a doubt! “I was blind but now I see.” John 9:25. The Pharisees tried to get him into a debate as to who Jesus was and whether he was a sinner by healing on the Sabbath. Again, he professed to not understand all that had taken place, but one thing he knew for sure was that he could see.

Sometimes we don’t understand all of the theological implications of everything that happens to us, but in our heart we know that we know that Jesus has saved us and we will be with Him for eternity. As Jesus gave the man physical sight, when we give our heart to Christ, we gain a new spiritual sight. We may not understand all that happens to us, but we know that we gain new spiritual eyes and see the Master in a way as never before.

It was John Newton who wrote:

“Amazing grace! How sweet the sound! That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; was blind, but now I see.”

I pray that Jesus will everyday give me better spiritual eyesight to see Him and to see the plan He has for my life!

• In verse four we see that the Lord called to Saul.
• In response, verse five has Saul asking, “Who are you, Lord?”
• Verse six Jesus identifies Himself and instructs Saul to go into the city and get further  instructions.
• We find in verse seven that the Lord blinded Saul and that he had to be led by others to the city.
• Verse seventeen tells us that Ananias, in response to the Lords directives, prayed over Saul and his sight was restored and was he was baptized.
• Verse twenty says that he immediately went to the synagogues to preach that Jesus is the Son of God.

From this progression of events we can see parallels for our own lives.

-God calls out to us
-We question the call
-He gives us directions for finding Him
-When we follow the directions, we receive our spiritual sight.
-We go and tell others that Jesus is the Son of God.

My prayer for us this week

“Our heavenly Father, thank you for the call, thank you for allowing us to question and then giving us direction to your Son Jesus. Thank you for restoring our spiritual sight that we might fix our eyes upon Jesus and follow instructions to tell others about Him. Amen and amen.”
