Has Flattening the Curve Flattened You?

Published on May 12, 2020

We all want to do our part to be responsible citizens and do what we can to flatten the curve during this world wide pandemic. We have willingly distanced and washed our hands. We have missed family and friends and gathered in new ways on ZOOM and other technology. We have been diligent…. and hopeful.

Yet weariness is setting in. Comments get voiced that reveal discouragement,  and even hopelessness for tomorrow. We question how to get through to the other side.

Day by day and step by step we will find a way. Prayer, and wisdom beyond ourselves will be needed. It will be hard work. We need each other as we walk together.

Many before us have gone through trying times. Their faith and hope speak back to us now. We can draw strength from those who have gone before us and light the way.

From the writing of Scripture, we hear the words of a famous man, David, who knew the depths the soul can plunge to in difficult times. His words echo hope for us today.

“Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him for the help of His presence.” Psalm 42:5 NLT

The help of His presence.”  David had learned the peace and comfort God’s presence can bring. He knew the deep waters of trouble, yet he also knew the deep place of God’s presence. He knew the help it was to go there and be quieted and strengthened. From there he was able to go out and face the giants of the day with fresh strength.

Today, when you recognize you are simply feeling flat, and the giants loom large, take a break and go to God’s presence. How? One of my favorite ways is to put some praise music on and let the words wash the dust of discouragement off my soul. Walk, or sit quiet and listen. Let the words of the song be prompts for spontaneous prayers. Lay all your “please, please” prayers aside and quietly let your heart steep in “thank you, thank you” for all God is. He is bigger than anything we face and His strength is enough to hold us through it. He loves us and His presence goes with us. Pause today, especially if you are feeling flat, and roll all your cares over to Him. He will carry them. He cares for you. His wisdom will comfort and guide you. His peace will calm your soul as nothing else can.

Lord Jesus, Today I ask that Your presence would meet me as I lean into You. Speak to me and fill me afresh with Your peace and Your comfort, Your wisdom and Your strength. Thank you that Your presence is always available and I can find fresh perspective there. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen
