Waiting on the Moth

“Be still, and know that I am God…” Psalm 46:10

“Abby, come quickly to the garage.” I knew she would be so excited to see the chunky caterpillar crawling on the floor. As predicted, she was thrilled by my discovery and wanted to keep him. Minutes later, our little friend had a new home in a plastic container filled with grass and leaves.

Abby awoke early the next day to check on the critter. To her surprise, the caterpillar had encased himself in a cocoon in the top corner of the plastic box. We were so excited because we knew it would only be a matter of time until a beautiful moth would emerge from the cocoon. It is so fascinating to watch God at work in the life cycle of insects and how He transforms them into new beings.

Now, my daughter and I are waiting. And waiting… And waiting… We check the plastic container several times a day to investigate for signs of change in the cocoon. Sadly, the encasement is dormant, no activity has been detected. It is hard for us to be patient and continue to wait. We are ready to see the beautiful designs on the wings of this new creature.

The moth has reminded me that sometimes in life, I have to learn to be still and wait on God. Many times I pray diligently for specific areas of my life and I sense God telling me to wait- wait on Him for His perfect timing. I have faith God has good things in store for me. I’m reassured God will help me grow and mature, just like the moth is growing and maturing right now in its cocoon. I need to pursue an attitude of forbearance and wait on the perfect timing of my Savior, for He knows what is best for me. Maybe you have a “moth” that you are waiting on in your own life. Do not lose hope. Waiting is rarely ever easy. But find hope in reflecting on what the moth begins as and then to the wonderful transformation that entails. God wants to help us become beautiful beings in His sight. We just need to trust Him to complete the metamorphosis.

The I AM God

“At the burning bush when Moses asked God “what is your name?” God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you” Exodus 3:14

When the Jews challenged Jesus, “Who do you think you are?” Jesus replied I AM. The Jews knew Jesus was claiming to be the same God that Moses had met at the burning bush. They considered this blasphemy worthy of death. They picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus slipped away from the temple grounds unharmed. (John 8:54-59)

By calling Himself I AM what is God saying about himself? I am ever present and I am enough.

For me, the following poem says it best. Read it slowly and put yourself into the poem: It will give you comfort to face the challenges of each new day.

Jesus said I AM

I am the beginning of all things
the end of all things and in the middle of all things

               I was present at your birth;
               I will be there at the end of your years,
               And through all the days in between.

               I am ever present. I am not only the
               God of your past and your future, but
               I am also the God of your present moments.

              All that I have been and will be, I am to you now.
              You do not have to look at the coming year
              And wonder how you will get through it
              physically, emotionally, mentally or financially

               I am your life, your health, your strength and your supply.
               I am your source, your confidence, your victory!

Be Still

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalm 46:10 ESV

I woke up this morning with this verse going through my mind.

I wonder if sometimes we breeze over this verse. Be still, and know that I am God. In our world today, be still makes us think of doing nothing, but ‘doing nothing’ hardly seems accurate here.

The Hebrew word raphah (raw-faw‘) means to release or let go; refrain from or let alone; to relax or wait for. Making yourself ‘let go’ of something is hardly doing nothing. Letting go can be hard work.

Children often struggle against their parents, thinking they know what’s best and wanting to do everything themselves. As a parent, I remember all the times I wanted to cry out, “Stop struggling! Let me help you!” Or when I explained, “I know you don’t agree or understand, but you just have to trust me on this.”

Don’t we do the same as adults? We want what we want, and we want it now! We want to understand. We ask When? Why? and How?

I imagine if we stopped struggling and trying to comprehend everything, we might hear Him say, Stop striving and worrying. Let Me be God. I know you don’t understand why or how…you just have to trust Me with this.

It’s not easy, but it is freeing. God is on His throne, no matter what happens, personally or nationally. And for that, I am forever thankful.

Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth.
Serve the Lord with gladness and delight;
Come before His presence with joyful singing.
Know and fully recognize with gratitude that the Lord Himself is God;
It is He who has made us, not we ourselves [and we are His].
We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.
Enter His gates with a song of thanksgiving
And His courts with praise.
Be thankful to Him, bless and praise His name.
For the Lord is good;
His mercy and loving kindness are everlasting,
His faithfulness [endures] to all generations.

Dear Father in Heaven, thank you for your everlasting love, truth, and mercy. Please help us to remember that no matter what happens, You are in control. You are on Your throne. May we learn to be still, let go of all we’re struggling to hold on to and worrying about, and let You be God. In Jesus’ sweet name we pray, Amen.
