Refreshing Peace

“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.” Psalm 4:8

God anointed David as His chosen king over Israel. Absalom tried to usurp God’s chosen king. David fled. His counselors and soldiers sided with Absalom. David could have feared and lost heart; instead he provided testimony and gave instruction.

In Psalm 4, David spoke his distress and confidence in Jehovah. He knew God heard his cries. David recognized God’s righteousness and his source of righteousness. It showed he knew Who gave him blessings and is all-powerful.

After verse one David spoke to all people. He taught that God sets apart the person who seeks Him. David explained how to be a godly person, one whom God sets apart. He gave six commands to people who want to be God’s child.

Tremble and be in awe of and fear God.
Follow the LORD and His commands.
Meditate about God and His Word in your heart.
Be still in mind, heart, and body to ponder on God.
Offer sacrifices of righteousness to God.
Trust in the LORD.

In God, David found his greatest blessing. For David, God was worth more than abundant grain and new wine. Being in God’s presence gave complete joy, contentment, and peace. Knowing and having a relationship with God gave David perfect peace. He rested from his worries and received complete refreshment. David trusted God and let down his own guard because of that perfect peace in God.

Oh Lord, please help us to trust only in You and look to you alone for our guidance and safety. Help us to place our complete trust in You so we can have perfect peace even in the tumult of our lives.

Then I Understood

“In heaven I have only you, and on this earth you are all I want.” Psalm 73:25 (CEV)

Give God your unfair situations of life. Ask Him for wisdom with the troubles and injustice of your life. Ask God to help you understand the end result, and rejoice you have God on your side. Memorize Psalm 73: 11, 25.

Crime rises, people are financially cheated, divorce settlements are unfair, abuse is rampant, and words hurt.

Injustice has affected us all and people seemly get away with it. So where is justice?

God is behind the scenes and He is on it! When we take things into our own hands, without God’s help, we are doing ‘what feels good’. Let God rule knowing ‘you are all I want’ for in that you will have peace even though it doesn’t make sense. Let the God of Justice deal with your injustice.

God of Justice, fill us with Your peace. We do not understand when unfairness falls at our feet and hurts us. We are asking for Your work in these situations. Give us wisdom, direction and patience. Thank you that You are all we need and help us to rest and trust in You. In the All-Powerful Name of Jesus, amen.

Where is Your Focus?

“Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the LORD, who has compassion on you.“ Isaiah 54:10

Forty million Americans over the age of 18 are affected by some form of anxiety disorder — roughly 18 percent of the nation’s population according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA). Probably many countries today have similar statistics. Think of the millions spent on medications and appointments with medical health professionals. Plus consider the relational and social implications for each person who suffers from being depressed or anxious.

Could there be a spiritual element that could work along with other forms of therapy?

God created us and understands our deep complexities better than we do. Through that wisdom, He provides instructions, found in scripture, which both protect us and provide for us. For example, when it comes to our tendency to be anxious, He commands us to seek peace ? both internally and externally ? in our heart, mind and soul, plus in all our relationships.

We humans have limited power to control the world around us but we can have control over our internal world. Peace can seep into our souls in moments of anxiety when our minds focus instead on God’s total sovereignty over the affairs of the nations and our lives (Isaiah 40:12-25).

God, in His perfect wisdom, promises that we can experience peace if we focus our thoughts on Him. Jesus comforted his disciples by telling them not to fear by relaying to them that God knows when sparrows fall to the ground and that they are of greater value than many sparrows (Matthew 10: 29-31). We can take comfort in the fact He is a personal God who knows us and the details of our lives, and loves us deeply.

We cannot control our circumstances but we can turn to the one who controls all things. Peace will spread deep within us as our focus shifts from circumstances to the one who governs all.

Jesus I need your peace deep in my soul. Thank you that you are the Prince of Peace, the fruit of your Spirit’s work is peace and you promised to give your followers a peace that the world will not understand. I claim that peace today. Amen.

Finding Perfect Peace

“You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.” Isaiah 26:3

Almost everyone I know wants more peace in their lives. Many people that I know are desperately hoping and grasping for what seems altogether impossible in their present situations. They don’t see solutions but just maybe they can find some peace.

If there is a remedy for finding peace in our turmoil-filled lives, it will happen when we see our Holy God as He is, Almighty, all powerful, all-knowing, wholly Sovereign.

We will not learn how to free ourselves of anxiety – until we learn to give Him our worries and believe He will never forsake us no matter what is going on, according to the promise of Deuteronomy 31:6,

“Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.”

Most worry develops because we cannot fix our problems. We can’t make things happen and we can’t make things stop. When we choose to trust, worry loses its fierce grip from our nervous wringing hands.

We will have peace when we believe the same God who parted seas, loosed prison chains, and used marching men shouting and blowing trumpets to topple a city wall, is the same God who never leaves us in our hour of need. This same God will walk with us in the difficult trials of our lives.

We will have peace when we believe with assured confidence He will carry our burdens and carry us, too. He will take us through, always walking beside us. He is all the help we will ever need. This is why we can find peace when we make the significant choice to trust the Lord.

Piece versus Peace

I have heard serene and beautiful places described as a “little piece of heaven“. It may be a pristine beach with tumbling waves glistening in the moonlight. A vast mountain vista or a bubbling creek under the canopy of shade trees. But it is ONLY a piece.

It cannot replace the inner peace that comes from Heaven.

Why? Because where we live and move and have our being is time-bound. Our world is ever changing– minute to minute, second to second. Weather can affect that serenity. Hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and blizzards ravage the earth. Human progress can affect it as well. Bulldozers can topple mountains and oil tankers spill black gunk into the water, coating everything. And even if the serene views remain intact, our human emotions can discolor it. When we are angry or depressed we often block out birdsong and sunshine filtering through the leaves. No wonder cartoonists depict a dark cloud over the head of their characters. If there is one thing that is definitely not constant, it’s our mood.

“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7

This peace that passes all understanding, as Paul describes it, is not affected by change. It is constant, eternal, and unmoving. It doesn’t come and go, or ebb and flow. It is there like a solid foundation that is unshakeable even in times of turmoil. You can cling to it and know it’s not going to crumble. This peace only comes from anchoring our hearts, minds and souls into the living waters of our faith in God. It transcends whatever is happening in our ever-changing world, because His peace is not of this world. It is Heaven-sent. In John 16:33, Jesus said, “...in me you can have peace.”

Two words that sound the same but are so different.

The first one, pIEce – where the IE stands for I Enjoy – is fleeting. It can be gone in a moment.

The other is pEAce – where the EA stands for Eternal Access. For the believer, it is always there, no matter what.

Which will you choose to bask in?
