I tend to think we believe that with enough determination and caffeine we can go on forever. Are we thinking about what our body and soul truly needs when we are pushing ourselves beyond our limits?

What is on your plate right now? Maybe you have a full plate or far too much on your plate. Maybe you have some hard things on your plate right now and haven’t even considered taking care of yourself with some body and soul rest.

We might not want to admit it, even when caring people around us are suggesting it – we need rest.

If you are experiencing extreme weariness, frustration, and discouragement – the best remedy is to give all your cares to the Lord and rest in knowing He can carry it all. When you finally let go and stop wrestling, and instead rest, you will soon recognize that you are experiencing something new. In letting go and resting, you will find you are growing strong again.

Your strength is renewed when you let go and find God’s rest.

Can you begin to imagine the incredible source of strength that comes from our Almighty All-Powerful God? Now, imagine… He is offering it to you.

Yes, the ultimate mystery and blessing is that when you find God’s rest you will also find God’s strength.

Matthew 11:28
“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Isaiah 40:31
“But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.”

1 Peter 5:7
“Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”

Why don’t you try travelling light? Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28. Try it! Try it for the sake of those you love. How do you embrace someone if your arms are full of bags? For the sake of those you love, learn to set them down.

And for the sake of the God you serve, do the same. God has a great race for you to run. But you have to drop some stuff. How can you share grace if you’re full of guilt? How can you offer comfort if you’re disheartened? God is saying, “Set it down, child. I’ll carry that one.” What do you say we take God up on his wonderful offer? We just might find ourselves travelling a little lighter.

In response to an article on prayer, a bright young lady wrote me, “When in trouble I hesitate to ask Jesus to help me. It’s my fault that I got into trouble, so I should face the music and not bother Jesus about it.”

I admired her refreshing honesty and her willingness to take responsibility. Still, it’s not a good reason to stay away from God. He’s longing to hear from us especially when we’ve messed up. One of the sweetest words in the Bible is “Come.”

The invitation is to people who’ve messed up. “Come now, let us argue this out,” says the LORD. “No matter how deep the stain of your sins, I can remove it. I can make you as clean as freshly fallen snow” (Isaiah 1:18 Application Study Bible).

The invitation is to people who haven’t got it all figured out. Come just as you are with all your fears, questions, doubts and failures. “Come to me, all you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest,” Jesus said (Matthew 11:28 Application Study Bible).

We need to tell God exactly what we’ve done wrong and how we feel about it. “I’m sorry, Jesus for …. (name it).” It’s important to be specific.

How do you think Jesus will respond? I hear Him saying the same words to us that He said to the woman caught in adultery: “I do not condemn you. Go now and leave your life of sin” (John 8:11). When we come to Him in this way, He washes away our sin and gives us power to make a new start.

When we’ve messed up, we’re often very hard on ourselves. We flog ourselves with:

“I did it AGAIN! I’m so stupid. I’m no good. I’m a failure. I’ll never change.” These voices are not from God. Satan makes us feel like a complete failure. Jesus makes us feel like a person who can triumph over failure and learn from it.

Thank you, Father, that you do not condemn me when I have sinned. You forgive me and wash me clean. Help me now to forgive myself and give me the courage to make a new start.

Jesus said, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

As Dawn read that, she thought back to her grueling hike up a mountain during a spiritual retreat.

Oh how she struggled under the burden of an increasingly heavy backpack.
At each leg of her journey, a rock was added.
On each rock was the name of a sin like cursing or jealousy.
As she neared the top, the shape of a cross came into view.
Dawn was exhausted. She released the stones at the base of the cross.
You see, she was carrying burdens around she didn’t need to.

And I suspect, you do too.

The stones you carry have names like anger, jealousy, deceit, and fear.

Friend, today, lay down the weights of your life at the foot of the cross.
