Finding Stillness

“Be still, and know that I am God…”  Psalm 46:10

Lately, I’ve been feeling the impulse to push away bad news of any kind.

But after reading headlines regarding ongoing pestilences, wars, and human suffering, it seems excessive to simply ignore what is going on. Certainly, this world needs our prayers and assistance. Didn’t God call us to do more than bury our heads in the sand?

Absolutely. Jesus told us multiple times throughout Scripture how we are to care for each other. Therefore, it is vital to be aware of what’s going on, but crucial to remain steadfast in him.

In Psalm 46, we are taught that God is our refuge and we can have hope for the future. While the entire chapter consists of reminders of God’s might and of descriptions of what we can withstand when God is our focus, the key to peace is near the end of the chapter.

The last verses end with reminders of how God alone is our safe place; we are also given a beautiful call to action that reminds us that even, in the middle of turmoil, we can experience peace.  God simply prompts us to be still—stop talking, questioning, and arguing, and just listen.

He prompts us to know — stop doubting and have faith.

Finally, what does God prompt us to know? That he is God. He is the Almighty Refuge who is in control. He will guide us, protect us, and lead us to everlasting life.

Lord, it is so easy for me to get consumed by fear when the world seems to be falling apart. When my heart and mind are overwhelmed, help me to be still and to remember that you alone created this world; nothing in it is beyond your control!

Today, pause often to be still before God and remember who he is, responding with worship, praise and thanksgiving.
