“for I have learned to be content in whatever situation I am in.” Philippians 4:11
Learning contentment is the key, isn’t it. We may think we are content and along comes something new and we have to learn it all over again. This is what I experienced.
While going for a walk, I stepped on a pile of loose rocks and lost my balance and fell. My ankle twisted and I heard a bone crack. I knew I was in trouble, I couldn’t get up. It was early morning and Marvin was still sleeping. I had my cell and I called him. No answer. There was no one I could ask for help. I said to the Lord, “You have got to help me get up.” I tried again and this time I was able to stand. I called Marvin again and still no answer, so I started limping to our suite. By this time Marvin realized that I wasn’t in the suite to answer the phone and called me – by that time I was at the door.
And the ankle was painful and turning purple and swollen. After it was x-rayed, I was told a bone was broken.
So began a different life style. I couldn’t drive because it was my right foot. I couldn’t go for walks (my exercise), at first I couldn’t take a bath or shower. My activity was cut down to about 30% of my norm. Golfing was out of the question. My “norm” was taken away. I wasn’t content, I wasn’t rejoicing.
As God would have it, our friend, Norman Brown, who was staying with us that week, was reading a book called, “Contentment” by Richard Swenson, M.D. I knew I needed to learn more about being contented in all circumstances, so I ordered the book and it was delivered by the time we got home. I read it and learned.
For many years I knew that worry, irritableness, unhappiness about circumstances and restlessness are all signs of not trusting God, but now I needed God to burn those truths down deep in my heart and soul.
Dr. Henry Brandt teaches, ” Circumstances reveal your attitude”.
What did I do to become content?
I asked the Holy Spirit to change my attitude. Philippians 2:13,
For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.”
And then I asked Him to be in control of my life once again. It makes all the difference. He helped me want to do His will and He empowered me to be content.
